An extension is a smaller job, but it isn't a simpler one to measure properly. A quantity takeoff for an extension follows the same method as one for a much larger project, because the risk of missing something is the same proportionally.
Small footprint, same number of trades
An extension still touches groundworks, structure, finishes and services, just compressed into a smaller area. Each one still needs measuring on its own terms rather than folding several trades into a single rough allowance.
Junctions with the existing building need particular care
Where new work meets the existing structure is where extensions most often lose accuracy in a rushed takeoff. Measuring these junctions properly is what stops surprises when the existing building turns out different from what the drawings assumed.
The same NRM2 standard, whatever the scale
Measuring an extension to NRM2 means the quantities are laid out the same consistent way as any other job, so pricing against them is no less reliable just because the project is smaller.
